Cambodia is a fascinating country with an ancient culture and unique monuments. The Royal Government of Cambodia's efforts in promoting natural and cultural tourism are very encouraging. But as socially aware tourists, we are deeply concerned with Cambodia's growing reputation as a transit point for the child sex industry, and as a destination for men seeking sex with children. Despite existing laws, Cambodia's efforts to eliminate this slave trade have been hindered by corruption and poor law enforcement As travelers, we have a choice of where we go. The child sex trade in Cambodia is a threat to legitimate tourism in your nation, and must be stopped. We ask your cooperation on these points: - We request the Ministry of Tourism require law enforcement agencies to strictly penalize or close down hotels and guesthouses that provide venues for child sex tourists; - We request that victims of the child sex trade be treated with respect and compassion, while those who traffic in human beings be punished; - We request that the Ministry of Tourism organize a national meeting with the major travel agencies in Cambodia, in order to develop a comprehensive plan to stop all tourism that exploits children for sexual purposes. The members of Ethical Traveler and our partner organizations - Global Exchange, Not For Sale Campaign, and ECPAT-Cambodia - will monitor this situation, and inform travel agencies and the media of your progress.
